Here Are the Signs of a Dead Alternator

Your car’s alternator has a lot of responsibility. It not only keeps the battery charged but also powers various accessories and components. The average lifespan of an alternator is seven years. In terms of mileage, the average lifespan is 100,000 miles to 150,000 miles. If you notice any of the following problems listed below, The Shop Tire and Service Center says that it’s likely your alternator.

Accessory Problems

Accessory problems point to the alternator. If your vehicle’s accessories are not getting enough power, they won’t work. For example, your entertainment system may turn off and refuse to turn on again. You may notice that your power windows are opening and closing very slowly. Your seat warmers may not warm the seats. Any of these things point to a bad alternator.

Battery Light

If you drive an older automobile, you have an ALT or GEN light on your dashboard. If the light illuminates, there’s a problem with the alternator. In newer automobiles, the light is in the shape of a battery. If it comes on, there could be a problem with your car’s battery or the alternator.

Battery Trouble

Because the alternator powers the battery, you will end up with a dead battery if the alternator is dead. Your battery discharges while you are driving your automobile. The alternator charges the battery to ensure it never runs out. If the alternator is not working, your battery will be unable to keep a charge.

Burning Rubber/Wires

If you smell burning rubber or wires, this, too, can be a sign of a failing alternator. The burning rubber is the accessory belt to which the alternator is attached. Burning wires can indicate a problem with the electrical system attached to the alternator.

Dim Lights

One of the easiest ways to tell whether your alternator is going bad is to pay attention to how bright your headlights are. If they seem dim, your alternator could be going bad. You will also notice that the lights inside your automobile are dimmer, as well.

Frequent Stalling

The alternator powers the spark plugs. If the alternator is going bad and not generating power to the spark plugs, the spark plugs cannot generate a spark and your vehicle will stall frequently.

Growling/Whining

Finally, growling or whining sounds can also point to a faulty alternator. The growling sounds will come from the inside of the alternator where the interior mechanisms have worn down and are grinding against each other. Whining sounds are generally the alternator belt.
