Seven Signs Your Car’s Alternator Is Dying

The alternator is one of the most important parts of your vehicle’s electrical system. Using a series of belts and internal mechanisms, the alternator generates voltage (power) from friction. It’s what keeps your battery charged and helps to power your vehicle’s accessories. The Shop Tire and Service Center can replace your car’s alternator if it’s going bad. Here are seven signs you need a new alternator.

1. Warning Light

Newer automobiles have an ALT or GEN light that will illuminate if your vehicle is having alternator trouble. Your check engine light might also come on if the alternator is failing. The third light could be a battery-shaped light that will turn on for alternator or battery problems.

2. Electrical Issues

Today’s vehicle is equipped with power everything and accessories to boot. Your alternator has a lot to power. You might notice problems, such as slow power windows or an entertainment system that shuts itself off. This indicates the components are not getting enough power.

3. Headlight Problems

Dimming, flickering, or pulsating headlights indicate a power problem. The issue could be with your battery but the alternator could be the underlying cause. The alternator produces the power, so either the battery isn’t storing it or the alternator isn’t producing it.

4. Strange Smells

There are two ways a dying alternator can produce strange smells. First, you might smell burning rubber if the alternator belt is too tight and cannot move freely. Second, you might smell what could smell like an electrical fire if the alternator belt is too loose and slipping.

5. Dead Car Battery

As we mentioned above, the alternator powers your vehicle’s battery. It charges it and keeps it charged as it drains while you’re driving. If the alternator cannot keep the battery charged, the battery will die. Have the alternator and battery tested if your car battery dies.

6. Starting Problems

The alternator gives the spark plugs the electricity they need to generate the sparks that ignite the air/fuel mixture to start your car. If the alternator cannot produce electricity, you won’t be able to get your vehicle started. You might also stall once it starts.

7. Odd Noises

Grinding and rattling noises coming from your engine could be a problem with the alternator’s internal mechanisms. Whining sounds could be the alternator belt. These sounds are caused by other mechanical problems, as well, so have them checked ASAP.
